Trip-hop bedding down with pop crooning has happened before, but Lilywhite has fresh charms. Singer-songwriter Bonni Evensen sings as good as she writes, circling romantic despair and sketching emotional combat like a sympathizer and confidante. She's working with Rain Parade's Steven Roback and American Music Club's Tim Mooney, two pros who sharpen her songs with understated grace. After a sleepy start, the album shifts gear with the hopeful pop canter of Pills. Hopeful, yes--but the song's subject matter is antidepressant drugs and a fragmenting head. There are many other similar, contradictory positions on this sad album, but the centerpiece is quite, without doubt, Evensen's clear, soft voice. Girl floats like an angel.
